The Vietnamese and Chinese New Year begins the evening of February 2nd. Before leaving the US, I made sure I knew exactly what year on the animal wheel it would be so that I wouldn’t appear stupid. I found out that it would be the Year of the Rabbit.

Vietnam, Look For Me Cause Here I Come: How to Get A Visa
Blog: Lonely Girl Travels - 28 January 2011
Yes, travel is exotic and life-altering and profoundly moving. Yes, you encounter new environments, new people, new customs, and in that way, also encounter some new piece of yourself. Yes, you become more cultured, more able to pepper cocktail conversations with ledes like, “Well, when I was learning tango in Buenos Aires…,” and “There’s really [...]

Winter Vacay Part I--Southern Vietnam
Blog: Thiessen Twosome Does Japan - 19 January 2011
Vacation this year was a tad bittersweet due to the fact that I had to leave my husband in the grips of work in Japan, but Vietnam beckoned and tempted, so it was away once again to Southeast Asia, this time being tackled on my own.The journey began in Ho Chi Minh City (or Saigon as its still lovingly referred to by the people who live there), a maddening place full of motorbikes and noise pollution, and drowning in a sea of colors and scents:

Lady in Ho Chi Minh City
Blog: A Lady in London - 18 January 2011
After almost three weeks of traveling in Asia, exhaustion started to overtake me. I had been to three countries—one of them three times—and had not spent more than three nights in any one place. But I still had another destination on my itinerary before my trip was over: Ho Chi Minh City. At first I [...]

The Ghosts of Hué

The tunnels of Vinh Moc …. 50 klicks south of the 17th parallel …. Charlie squats in the bush …. Khe Sanh …. Langdoc …. Hamburger Hill …. Hell on earth. There is nothing much left to say that anything ever happened here. The mist clings close to the hills around Hué bathing everything in [...]

Halong Bay Cruise Boat Picture of the Week
Blog: Malaysia Asia - 15 January 2011
Halong Bay Cruise Boat is my Picture of the Week. I took this picture while I was on board another Vietnamese Junk Boat doing the day cruise around Halong Bay. During my trip there in April 2010, I went for both cruises - the Halong Bay Day Cruise and Halong Bay Overnight Cruise. The reason for this was that I wanted to fully experience the entire UNESCO World Heritage Site and it was something

The First Time I Almost Died-Ha Long Bay, Vietnam
Blog: Todd's Wanderings - 12 January 2011
By the end of this story a number of people will be dead. The compact dirty white van left the tourist choked streets of Hanoi, Vietnam’s French Quarter early in the morning. We were a group of 10 strangers bound together by our desire to see the turquoise beauty of Ha Long Bay, and its breathtaking limestone islands thrusting out of the waters. We were also cheap, backpackers looking to save money but desperate to spend 3 days living on a boat, cruising the pearl culturing backwaters of Vietnam’s UNESCO World Heritage site, and exploring the natural caves dotting the area.

Finally I reached breaking point, the absurdity of the situation had become intolerable, I cracked first. “Ok, so what part of Ireland are you from then?” I had been talking to two Irish girls on the deck of the boat for the past ten minutes without either of us mentioning the big green elephant in [...]

Sailing the Dragon Bay
Blog: Drifting Aimless - 26 December 2010
20th Nov “So…… did you watch the footie last night?”, it was phrase dropped in conversation with all the effect of some casually tossed hand-grenade. Even after all these years I winced like some traumatized war veteran at a twenty one gun salute. Can there be any greater shame than being young, male and having [...]

Don’t Tread On Me
