Whores on Hondas!
Blog: Drifting Aimless - 30 May 2011
“He was comin’ at me like a hoor on a honda” the immortal phrase uttered by a former classmate of mine in reference to some nonspecific drunken brawl which took place in the back streets of Dublin several years ago. It had lain dormant in the darkened recesses of my memory for all this time, [...]

Phong Nha Farmstay, F*ck Yeah
Blog: Lonely Girl Travels - 13 May 2011
I could tell by the way he slid the business card over to me, by the utter seriousness in his eyes, that he wasn’t fucking around. “Hands down, without a doubt,” he stabbed the card with his index finger, “the best thing I did in Vietnam.” I put the Phong Nha Farmstay card in my [...]

Adventures in Vietnamese Bureaucracy: Dong Hoi Visa Shenanigans
Blog: Lonely Girl Travels - 10 May 2011
Blond and sun-crisp, with a Marlon Brandon mouth and board shorts, Ben was the first Westerner I’d seen in Dong Hoi. He lit a cigarette and sighed as his driver secured my backpack to the roof of the SUV. “Where are you from in the States?” “California.” “Ah, well,” he exhaled an agitated puff, “this [...]

Royal Honeymoon Asia
Blog: Fish Egg Tree - 2 May 2011
There was a big surprise over the weekend when the palace announced, seemingly at the last minute, that Price William and his bride Kate would postpone their honeymoon. It ended a lot of ridiculous speculation by the media about where the couple would be spending their honeymoon--in such outlandish locations as Kenya, the Virgin Islands and Lizard Island, off Australia.

The creature on the bridge
Blog: Drifting Aimless - 2 May 2011
Sing in me, Muse, and through me tell the story of that man skilled in all ways of contending, the wanderer, harried for years on end, after he plundered the stronghold on the proud height of Troy. He saw the townlands and learned the minds of many distant men, and weathered many bitter nights and [...]

Morning Star rising
Blog: Drifting Aimless - 18 April 2011
Prising apart the soft pink flesh with my fingertips as I pressed it close against my lips, the dragonfruit burst suddenly revealing its secret inner fleshiness. Juices spilled freely down over my chin and neck staining my shirt. Few things were as evocative of the mysterious Asian southeast as its bountiful bizarre and utterly exotic [...]

Friends and Phở: A Week in Saigon
Blog: teach travel play - 12 April 2011
They say you can never go home again. A tricky saying when your home has spanned three countries in six months. Don’t get me wrong, I in no way feel sorry for myself, in fact this popular phrase has freed me up to the fun and challenging task of taking the concept of “home” with [...]

A New Way of Thinking About Trash
Blog: Hole In The Donut - 11 April 2011
Some years ago an elfin man approached me as I walked along a boulevard in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. He could see I was puzzled and wanted to help. What did I need? Holding out my handfull of trash, I pantomimed dumping it, then shrugged my shoulders and swept my hand in a semicircle [...]

Lonely Planet Sightings in Mui Ne
Blog: Fish Egg Tree - 10 April 2011
There were a couple sightings of Lonely Planet writer Nick Ray in Mui Ne this week. Did you meet him?... and more importantly, did you show your best side this week at your restaurant, resort, shop or tour company? You better have, because you may not have another opportunity to impress Lonely Planet for perhaps two more years. He's already left town, so I'm told.

Degenerates and Degeneracies
Blog: Drifting Aimless - 28 March 2011
Sliding in closer against the green baize, with great care and deliberation, I sized up the shot. Bringing the cue parallel to eye level, mentally measuring distances, angles and calculating expectations of all probable future scenarios. I paused, a Zen-like omniscience descended. I became aware suddenly of the lizards creeping in the rafters, of the [...]

All-New Filipino Con Artists in Saigon: The Pham Ngu Lao Gang
Blog: Fish Egg Tree - 27 March 2011
The Photos below are of well-known Filipino con artists who have been stalking tourists in Saigon for several years. This is the first time many of them have been photographed, however. These photos are taken from their regular morning gatherings in the part across from the intersection of Pham Ngu Lao and De Tham Streets in District 1, HCMC. Disturbingly, security guards are usually standing right next to them.

In the city of tailors
Blog: Drifting Aimless - 21 March 2011
I take the early morning bus to Hoi An, a city famed for its tailoring industry. Having been fitted for a nice cashmere suit I became dimly aware and somewhat troubled by the fact that it would almost certainly not fit me once I returned from traveling. I found it strange that despite the fact [...]

What I Wake Up To Every Morning

From the window of my little room, I can see and hear the ocean which lies less than 50 yards from where I sit. Mui Ne is a bay without giant waves crashing on the shore.
