Culture Shock Ratings

The culture shock rating considers the level of development in the location, the area's infrastructure and how easy it is to access services. It also takes into consideration how different the food and customs are and whether English is widely spoken. While generalisations are always tricky, here’s a summary of the ratings:

Rating 1

This is the least confronting of Intrepid's product range. English is the native language and the food, customs and access to services will be familiar to you.

Rating 2

You will probably have experienced food like this in restaurants back home and English is commonly spoken. Services are available most of the time but there may be some cultural differences.

Rating 3

Expect some culture shock. You will be exposed to signs of poverty and access to services may be sporadic. The food will be quite different to home and English speakers harder to find. Respecting the local culture will make it easier to fit in and really experience the location.

Rating 4

The comforts of home are more of a rarity. English is not common and the food will be quite different to what you are used to. It is important to observe some of the local customs to not cause offence. Many of the locals' standard of living may be confronting.

Rating 5

You're really out there! You'll need to pay specific attention to health and hygiene. A large proportion of locals' living conditions are a world away from standards you are used to. You may have difficulty finding an English speaker and there is little or no access to services. Paying heed to local customs is essential.

Itinerary

Day 1 Explore Ho Chi Minh City

Dive into the streets of Ho Chi Minh City on a fascinating walking tour through Chinatown, exploring markets and then watching life rush by over coffee. Slurp up a bowl of traditional pho for lunch before seeing some of Ho Chi Minh City's iconic buildings and witnessing the tragedies of war at the War Remnants Museum.

Day 2 Cao Dai Temple/Cu Chi Tunnels

Leave the city behind and be welcomed into the home of a local family for lunch. Arrive at the Cao Dai Temple in time for their noon ceremony and get an insight into this fascinating religion, which is a blend of the world's major religions. Travel further through southern Vietnam's countryside to the underground tunnel complex of Cu Chi. Explore the fascinating array of structures and marvel at the ingenuity of the locals who built them - an incredible testament to human survival. Return to Ho Chi Minh City, perhaps sharing a meal in one of the hundreds of nearby restaurants.

Day 3 Mekong Delta Homestay

Journey to My Tho, a port city and the gateway to the Mekong Delta. Jump onboard a private boat and cruise the river, visiting a local fish farm and tropical fruit gardens. Get an insight into the local way of life as row boats take us deeper into the canals, stopping at a riverside restaurant for a traditional lunch. Further explore the region's waterways before arriving at our homestay for the evening. Wander the beautiful grounds of our host's garden and share a delicious meal, learning more about life on the Delta.

Day 4 Mekong Delta/Ho Chi Minh City

Wake early and take to the paths on a bicycle, visiting a local market and wowing over all the great produce on offer. Help out with lunch before saying goodbye to our hosts and returning to Ho Chi Minh City.
