Part of the Hoa Sua family, this relaxed cafe-restaurant is renowned for its cakes and pastries, but also serves delicious Vietnamese (try the pho ) and Western dishes.

  2. B

    Restaurant Bobby Chinn

Blending the best of East and West, owner-chef Bobby Chinn is part Chinese and part Egyptian and brings all his influences to bear in this classy setting. Try the superb salads or the fish with flair, chased down with a chocolate bomb. For an aperitif, coffee or even a sheesha (water pipe) with fruit-flavoured tobacco, move through the silk drapes to the chill-out cushions at the back.

    Zan Z Bar

An ultrahip diner on Dong Du, this place has quickly generated a buzz thanks to its Pacific-Rim fusion cuisine. Try chilli crab noodles or the excellent pita pizzas. Definitely one of the ‘in’ places.

    Sao Hom

Set in the (now upmarket) former market, Sao Hom has an atmospheric riverside setting. The menu includes Vietnamese, international and some fusion dishes, including crispy spring rolls for a change and some tandoori dishes. It is very popular at lunch and remains one of Can Tho’s most alluring spots.

  5. Tavan Restaurant

This hotel restaurant has a good rep, and is the place for a ser ious splurge. The Parisian chef has been here for years, and while there are Asian dishes on the menu it’s best to stick to European classics like the rack of lamb (US$20), raclette (US$28) or pasta (from US$4).

Paying homage to the classic Vespa, this buzzing place has a great location for watching the world go by. The menu includes great burgers with original toppings, plus a mix of Italian and Vietnamese favourites.

  7. F

    Au Lac House

On a sultry evening, you'll want to be seated on the terrace of Au Lac House, sipping cocktails and dining on finely prepared Vietnamese dishes. It's housed in a roomy colonial villa and the service is attentive and efficient, but the food is not to be outshined. The kitchen deftly concocts rustic country dishes and more-exotic innovations.
