Lonely Planet review for Phu Quoc Pearls

On an isolated stretch of Long Beach, Phu Quoc Pearls is a requisite stop if you’re in the market for pearls. A small shop sells pearl necklaces and earrings, and wall panels describe (in English) how the oysters yield their bounty. There’s a small cafe on site. Avid pearl hunters can find cheaper wares at kiosks in the village of Ham Ninh, but at least you have a guarantee of authenticity here.

" Pork On The Side "

After a ceremonial wait while the coals turned from black to grey, Ding sat down on the deck chair nearest our table. He barbecued juicy pieces of what we assumed came from the pork’s side. Could it be pancetta, I asked myself. And in our 117th futile attempt to get Ding to translate ‘Pork on the Side’ for us, he simply pointed to us, to the bbq, to the meat and to himself – Pork on YOUR side, he smiled.

Don't be taken elsewhere by the dodgy taxi-drivers (who like to claim that this place is "burnt down" or "closed for business"); this place is the genuine article. Run by a laconic Ozzie guy who knows his stuff, but is understandable a bit miffed about the locals trying to undermine his business. There is an interesting little museum and a small but good selection of pearls. The pearls are all cultivated locally; unlike the imitation pearl farms down the road with their imported "pearls." When you're done with pearls, there is a nice little beach bar with great views of Long Beach.
