    Restaurant Alley

If you fancy skipping the main tourist scene on the riverfront, then try this small alley between Ð Dien Bien Phu and Ð Phan Dinh Phung where there are about a dozen local restaurants scattered on both sides of the street. Barbecued meats, seafood hotpots and simple vegetables, it’s all here.

  3. Guangzhou Assembly Hall

In a fantastic location facing the Can Tho River, Chua Ong (Ong Temple) is set inside the Guangzhou Assembly Hall and is one of the most interesting religious sites in town. It was originally built in the late 19th century to worship Kuang Kung, a deity symbolising loyalty, justice, reason, intelligence, honour and courage, among other merits. It is designed to symbolise the Chinese character for nation, with rows of enclosed sections laid out symmetrically. Cantonese Congregation Pagoda

Occupying a splendid location facing the Can Tho River, this small Chinese pagoda, the Cantonese Congregation Pagoda, was built by the Cantonese Congregation. The original one was constructed on a different site about 70 years ago. The current pagoda was built with funds donated by overseas Chinese more recently. Can Tho used to have a large ethnic-Chinese population, but most of them fled after the anti-Chinese persecutions (1978-79).

    Van Tho 2

Van Tho 2 is an employment agency for the blind which employs professional massage therapists trained at Ho Chi Minh University in Vietnamese and Japanese massage techniques. The massages are an absolute bargain, very legit compared to what is on offer in some places and a good way to put some money into a worthy project.

    Munirangsyaram Pagoda

The ornamentation of pagoda is typical of Khmer Theravada Buddhist pagodas: it doesn’t have any of the multiple Bodhisattvas and Taoist spirits common in Vietnamese Mahayana pagodas. In the upstairs sanctuary a 1.5m-high representation of Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha, sits serenely under a Bodhi Tree.

    Cappuccino

This Italian restaurant may not look that stylish but looks can be deceiving, as the menu features some delicious dishes at absurdly affordable prices. Pastas, risottos, pizzas, plus US$4 mains such as veal escalope with mushroom sauce. Oh and did we mention the Mexican and Vietnamese food, plus the tempting tiramisu?

    Xe Loi

Also called the Cyclo Club, is the most happening nightspot in Can Tho. The huge gardens include plenty of tables and even a fake beach on the riverside. Inside the sort of Wild West-ish saloon is a full-on nightclub with DJs and regular live music. Free entry unless there is an event, but drinks are pricey.
