Lonely Planet review for Mariamman Hindu Temple

This is the only Hindu temple still in use in HCMC and is a little piece of southern India in the centre of town. Though there are only a small number of Hindus in HCMC, this temple is also considered sacred by many ethnic Vietnamese and ethnic Chinese. Indeed, it is reputed to have miraculous powers. The temple was built at the end of the 19th century and dedicated to the Hindu goddess Mariamman.

A moving experience amongst the scooters.

The Miramman temple has changed from the version of the LP guidebook I have. In it, it talked about towers on the second floor and parts of the temple still being a factory. I was just there today (Jan 27, 2011) and it has been returned to being a temple, but there is no way to get up to the second floor.

There are usually a number of people praying, which adds a lot to the strength of the temple's atmosphere. It may not be necessary, but asking politely if pictures are allowed will get a very positive response. The ornate carvings and the various shrines are absolutely worth the visit. It is had to miss this colorful temple from the street, as it is surrounded by unremarkable architecture housing hotels, cafes and bakeries.
