Lonely Planet review for Fine Arts Museum

A classic yellow-and-white building with a modest Chinese influence, the Fine Arts Museum, houses one of the more interesting collections in Vietnam, ranging from lacquer- and enamel-ware to contemporary oil paintings by Vietnamese and foreign artists. If that doesn’t sound enticing, just come to see the huge hall with its beautifully tiled floors. The 1st floor includes a display of officially accepted contemporary art: most of it is just kitsch or desperate attempts to master abstract art, but occasionally something brilliant is displayed here. Much of the recent art is for sale and prices are reasonable.

A quiet and informative oasis in the city center.

    dorian1972 recommends this,

The courtyard of the Museum is definitely in better repair than the interior. Most of the floors are looking their age now, with cracks and chips and missing parts to be found many places. What was once no doubt beautiful now looks sadly neglected.

One thing that struck me as curious in the exhibits was the focus of the post-1975 art. A whole room dedicated (mostly) to celebrating naked women from around the country. It was a little surprising after seeing room after room of "safe" art to see such a profound change in tastes for this particular era.

I would disagree with the idea that any of the art is a "desperate attempt" to capture anything. There are certainly pieces that try to capture a certain style, but that does not make them any less genuine for the effort. Taking in the museum a section at a time and seeing it as a "whole piece" on its own is quite an adventure in artistic evolution.

During the National Exhibit going on now, the museum is open until 5pm.
