The outstanding Vietnam Museum of Ethnology is one of the country’s premier museums. Occupying a fine modern structure, the terrific collection features well-presented tribal art, artefacts and everyday objects gathered from across the nation. Displays are well labelled in Vietnamese, French and English. For anyone with an interest in Vietnam’s minorities, it’s an essential visit – though it is located way out in the suburbs.

The best Ethnological museum in the region, period.

Definitely the best curated and most well stocked Ethnological museum in the region - a real gem. Far better than anything you find in neighboring China, Laos, or Cambodia, which share many of the same ethnic groups.
Context in the main museum building is excellent - visitors are first given a cultural and geographical overview of government-recognized ethnic groups across the country, before being taken through a diverse range of artifacts grouped by culture.
The large external garden behind the museum proper houses scale ethnic constructions such as long-houses, community halls and traditional dwellings, as well as weaving and metallurgy installations, traditional games, and more. This part is very well suited for kids.
Unfortunately, it's a bit of a pain to get out to. Beware of rapid taxi meters, we got stung with one and it's not pleasant to deal with. Maybe ask your hotel to organize a car or motorbike taxi at a pre-arranged price instead of grabbing one from the street. Note that in between mid-town and the museum is a huge strip of Japanese (and some Korean) restaurants, if you feel like doing dinner.
