Lonely Planet review for History Museum
A must for the architecture more than the collection, the History Museum was formerly home to the École Française d’Extrême Orient in Vietnam. It is an elegant, ochre-coloured structure built between 1925 and 1932. French architect Ernest Hebrard was among the first in Vietnam to incorporate a blend of Chinese and French design elements in his creations, and this particular building remains one of Hanoi’s most stunning architectural showpieces.

Good info, but not all translated.
pratyeka recommends this,
Aside from the revolving exhibition space, the exhibition consists of pre and protohistory (much of which unfortunately remains untranslated), a lot of information on Vietnamese-Chinese wars of independence, and lots of old folk and religious artifacts.
The picks of the exhibition are as follows.
First, the strong range of ancient bronze drums. The lower Red River region not only has the largest number of these peculiar regional protohistoric items, but also the largest variety: look for the sexually explicit one! Children will find deciphering many of the patterns entertaining, and they are at an accessible height.
Second, some great old Buddhist architectural pieces.
Finally, a broad collection of Cham sculptural and stonework in the upper gallery is near unique in the world and definitely worth seeing if you are not making it to central Vietnam.
The cafe in the courtyard is reasonable but service is inattentive.
