Lonely Planet review for Vine Wine Boutique Bar & Cafe

Vine is widely considered to be one of Hanoi's finest restaurants. It certainly has the city's most comprehensive wine cellar. Gourmet pizzas are a headliner, but the menu also includes excellent steaks, burgers, clay pots and a smattering of Thai dishes. It may sound over-ambitious, but the kitchen manages to keep all balls in the air. Hybrid East-West décor creates a contemporary atmosphere.

Wine selection OK, food disappointing and overpriced.

    pratyeka does not recommend this,

I went mostly for the wine on the strength of online reviews, expecting western food to match the price point.

Unfortunately none of the food (between two of us, two courses each and a salad) was of a quality matching its price point... and some of the dishes we ordered were very extravagantly priced with no justification. Not only was presentation poor, but some of it was positively bad.

I thought the place was run by an English wine expert from Sussex with the same name - how wrong I was! It turns out the boss is from Chicago. I hear on the local grapevine there's actually two brothers, one of them is running the wine cellar next door and the other one runs the restaurant. My advice? Skip the restaurant, it's a waste of money, particularly if you are expecting European standard dining at this price point. They try to make their name on wines but a significant portion of their menu is burgers [sic] and they don't even have a cheese platter on the menu: it's positively barbarian!

Location-wise, it's a long way north (Tay Ho / West Lake area), to boot. If you're not staying in the immediate area, don't even bother coming here. For most visitors I suggest the Ho Chi Minh city owned business Bacchus Corner (http://www.bacchuscorner.com/) as a better stocked cellar in a more central location and with more attentive service, a more private ambience, better food and far more reasonable prices.

    Vine Does Not Disappoint!

    tsgill recommends this,

Been coming to Hanoi for the last four years now, and always make it a point to dine at Vine.

I have had a late breakfast (once), lunch (once) and dinner (twice) and each time, I am simply amazed at how the restaurant can continue to uphold its tradition of good, hearty food which is tasty - and this is one quality I am always looking for when I dine out.

This last visit (in May 2011) was for dinner with six other people and the total bill (including copious amounts of alcohol, dessert and coffee) came up to only US$50 per person. This is to me, an incredibly good deal: solid, tasty food in good-sized portions at one of Hanoi's most established dining venues.

Besides the food, there is that vibrant décor and three levels of dining to suit whatever mood you’re in. I must add that I love the fact that the place is quiet – it makes for a respectable and pleasurable outing. Kudos to everyone at Vine - you make every visit memorable!

Ooh, ah, Vine is very fine - no matter who you are...

    leslieleong recommends this,

"Ooh, ah, that's Hanoi's best restaurant, " said my partner's resident colleagues.

Off the busy streets of Hanoi, it’s like stepping into another world, a dark lavish world. … like a peek into Hanoi’s history of European elite in what was then part of French Indochina – but a modern version, of course.

Expensive? Well, yes by Vietnamese standards but a bargain for western standards in such an exquisite environment. Service may seem uppity but it’s high-class for all customers alike: the expat’ elite, and budget travelers on an anniversary splurge. Although a waiter at the ready, standing by, (as in near-by), can make you feel a bit self conscious – but not enough to harm our social banter.

The food is delicious and generous with gorgeous presentation and fresh ingredients. An eclectic menu offers many unique cross-cultural dishes. Fabulous gourmet pizza and Asian inspired salmon on a huge bed of grilled veggies and greens were our fine choices, after a glass of champagne (per Aussie etiquette).

They are a serious wine bar so if you ask for it, they'll probably have it. It is out of the way, making a taxi best, unless you want to risk being a statistic on a "moto." And if you don’t like that kind of over-the-top service, surprisingly they do take away pizzas.
