Lonely Planet review for Restaurant Bobby Chinn
Blending the best of East and West, owner-chef Bobby Chinn is part Chinese and part Egyptian and brings all his influences to bear in this classy setting. Try the superb salads or the fish with flair, chased down with a chocolate bomb. For an aperitif, coffee or even a sheesha (water pipe) with fruit-flavoured tobacco, move through the silk drapes to the chill-out cushions at the back.

Do not be fooled
gkc does not recommend this,
A good dining experience should stimulate the senses of sight, sound and taste. Upon entering Bobby Chinns Hanoi restuarant you would not be out of mind thinking that you were in a seedy backstreet Moraccan bordello. We were confronted with aging gwailos who think sucking on the pipes of a Moraccan Hookah (the pipe) is hip. The place is dingy and oppressive, The first of the three senses was not positively stimulated.
The Music in the restaurant took me back to my youth and beyond. An educated selection in non commercial music presented stimulus to my ears. It was an initimate dining experience and the silence of fellow diners was either representative of everyone being taken by surprise with the poor quality food or they became engrossed in the restuarants dulcet tones.
Lastly, and the most important, my taste buds were not stimulated. The chefs complementary starter was a tasteless mush that would have dislodged the dentures of some elderly citizens. My wife selected the a la carte and I selected the sampler. We are both lovers of food and we were both extremely disappointed. It was neither a taste of Vietnam or any cross cultural mix. None of the dishes stimulated our tastebuds. In summary the food was bland and not representative of the region or any other region. Bobby Chinns is trading under the name of a TV personality and not style or quality of food. If you are in Hanoi and you are thinking of choosing Bobby Chinns restaurant don't. For little extra you can find a real chef at Verticale

New location but still the best option in town
lordmelchitt recommends this,
It's moved out of the city centre but it's only a 10-15 minute taxi ride and definitely worth it. We had a 3 course set menu for about $30 which was fabulous. The new building is not as cool but the food was excellent and we took a walk around the big lake while we were out there which was really nice. The map on this web site is wrong but you can find a link to the new location here http://www.bobbychinn.com/Contact.html

the celebrity chef experience
sandyhudd recommends this,
The red and white rose petals floating in the toilet bowl and the magnifying glasses handed out to read the menu are a little disconcerting but the food and service are excellent. Take your credit card though as, by Vietnam standards, the bill is serious money - the taster menus are US$48 and main courses are around the $20 mark.
Good for: Romance, food, service
