About 1.5km (1mi) north of Hoan Kiem Lake, away from the standard hotel areas, the Thien Thai is a big mid-range place with attractive rooms and attentive service. All rooms have views of the green and terracotta patchwork of Hanoi's rooftops, and some are more stylish than you'd expect, too.
Designed to look French, the 10-storey building is quite imposing in this largely low-rise district where yellow stucco French-era schools and tiled roofs are still quite common. The rooms themselves all have windows but vary depending on the floor. For example, floors 3, 4, 5 and 9 have wooden floors, the rest are carpeted. Most rooms have balconies and are a pretty reasonable size. The top-floor bar has fine views across the Red River, and the restaurants serve decent, if not spectacular, European and Asian fare.
