Lonely Planet review
The Joy Hotel is a hidden gem in the backstreets of Hanoi's historic Old Quarter. Its location in one of the quietest streets in the Quarter, combined with the helpful service of multilingual Ms Thuan, makes it a good option for budgeteers wanting to be near, but not in the midst of, Hanoi's bustle.
Bat Su (which was once home to chinaware merchants, but not any more) is not exactly outer-space-style silence, but when you consider how busy other parts of old Hanoi are, the location is a big selling point. So too are the rooms, which for the money are quite huge. The three front rooms have balconies looking into or down onto the trees and room enough to swing a lion. Others are a bit smaller, and some at the back don't have windows, but all are good value. Ms Thuan can organise tours and, being from Sapa, has a vast knowledge of northern Vietnam that she can impart in fluent English, French or Chinese. The only downside is that while Internet is free in the foyer, the computer is occupied by men playing games.
