Lonely Planet review for Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre

You can't leave Hanoi without seeing a traditional water-puppet show. The shows, which appeal to all ages, are charming, picaresque entertainments accompanied by a traditional Vietnamese pit orchestra. Order your tickets early in the day for the best seats. Your hotel can probably help.

An experienced traveler's honest opinion_the water puppets

Upon arrival at the performance myself and my companion were experiening a combinaton of excitement, anticipation, and glee. When we arrived at the theatre we were ushered in by a kind, gentle Vietnamese woman and we eagerly took our seats. Just as we arrived, the lights fell and our awe grew. We were met with one of the most breathtaking displays of puppeteering in not only South East Asia, but quite possibly the entire world. The artsts were unequaled in skill and precision as they flawlessly combined movement, expresion, choreography and musical prowess to present the ancient and time honored tradtion of Vietnamese water puppetry. Some of the highlights included the much heralded drowning dragon routine that was executed perfectly as well as the sleeping skip. I have seen my fair share of puppet routines and I must say that this far exceeded expectations and left me begging for more! This was certainly a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am happy I siezed it...luckily I did not wait until I was 65 (like most of the audience) The use of flash photography is essentially required and truly sheds a new light on the age old arte. If you do anything in Hanoi, smoke tobacco bong, clench some Dong and watch the Water Puppet Show!

    the most pleasant headache ever

An unforgettable experience. The “stage” is a backdrop put in the water, and the puppets are controlled by amazingly talented (and water-logged) puppeteers. Honestly the puppets are just bursting with life. The music might be headache-inducing for ears that aren't used to the clanging sounds of traditional Vietnamese music, so be warned. Don't miss the programs at the door to the theater as they provide translations of the action... you will be lost without it!! As much as the heat might make you wish that the first few rows were a splash zone, you should be safe.
