Christie’s Cool Spot
The bar downstairs is where US war veterans hold forth about ongoing American politics vis-à-vis the American War in Vietnam. These days they’re joined by Western expats in search of an ice-cold beer or the comfort food available in the restaurant upstairs.

Q Bar
The mother of all trendy nightspots in HCMC, Q Bar seems to have been around almost as long as the Opera House. An enduring and endearing spot, it pulls the beautiful people thanks to hip music and sophisticated decor. It’s on the side of the Municipal Theatre, across from the Caravelle Hotel.

Bellevue Bar
Among the best places in Saigon for a sundowner, the Majestic's top-floor Bellevue Bar has exquisite views of the river among old-world opulence. If the heights make you feel too woozy or blasé, head down to the ground-level Cyclo Bar, with ringside views of motorcycle mayhem.

Tam Tam Cafe
Set in a lovingly restored tea warehouse, this cool hang-out indulges in comfortable tropical decor and plenty of lounge space upstairs. The outdoor seating is good for people-watching, while the scene is livelier around the pool table and the balcony.

Tau Bar
With an exterior tagged with graffiti and an interior of unforgiving concrete this bunker-cum-bar is as urban as it gets in Sapa. There’s a bass-heavy sound system, a DIY jukebox that’s strong on hip hop, and always a crowd around the pool tables.

Qing
This slim, nicely designed bar has a classic red finish and atmospheric lighting. Qing gathers an assortment of travellers, expats and locals. There's a good wine and food selection (fusion, Asian tapas) and a decent salon upstairs.

Lobby Bar
The inviting Lobby Bar in the Victoria Chau Doc Hotel has tropical French-colonial allure, a large drink menu and a pool table.
Just remember that Chau Doc is a fairly sleepy town and tends to shut down early.

Le Jarai
Moored on the river behind the Victoria Hotel, this boat makes a pleasant setting for a cocktail if it is not chugging up the river. Or try the lobby bar in the hotel, which has a colonial ambience and a pool table.

Le Pub
The name sums it up perfectly, British pub meets French cafe-bar, and the result is popular with expats and travellers alike. An extensive beer list, nightly promotions, cocktail jugs and pub grub draw them in.

Tea Café Cung Dinh
It's amazing what a little mood lighting can do. This garden café set in a dreary car park becomes a fairyland at night, lit by red Chinese lanterns. They serve a range of exotic teas and delicious cakes.

A little way from the main action, it is worth hopping along to Pogo for the chilled atmosphere. The open-air bar features lively decoration, free pool, some sorted sounds and big beanbags for crashing on.
