Lonely Planet review for Hoi An Old Town

Now a Unesco World Heritage site, Hoi An Old Town is governed by preservation laws that are well up to speed. Several buildings of historical and cultural significance are open for public viewing, a number of streets in the centre of town are off-limits to cars, and building alterations and height restrictions are well enforced. If only Hanoi would follow suit in its historic Old Quarter.

Hoian- Highlight of my holiday in Vietnam

    jenniferphan recommends this,

It is beautiful city with lovely people. We found peaceful and relaxing after 3 days in Hoi An. When I was planning a trip to Hoi An, I found www.hoian-tourism.com as a useful site which offers many travel tips.

Don't miss Free bike tour to Kim Bong village with Hoi An students. You can bike around villages and see stunning rural scenes, rice paddies, fishing villages, fields of water buffalo and Bamboo Bridge. You will learn and get many insides which are never written on guide books. It’s all about a cultural exchange and giving the volunteer students opportunities to practice their English language skills through outdoor activities

Old worldly and protected in a country that radiates history

    jamie recommends this,

Visiting old town isn't so much like stepping back in time, more akin to visiting a quiet yet modern museum. It's much more tranquil than the rest of Hoi An, and there is a level of respect and honor that permeates the air. The people living and working here seem to understand the importance of protecting this beautiful town. It was a pleasure to leave the bustle of the tailors and shoemakers behind, if only for a few hours.

    Delightful little town

    rebeccaa recommends this,

It is so nice just wandering around the old town of Hoi An. It's very beautiful, especially at night when the small lanterns light up the district. Sit down and have dinner in one of the restaurants overlooking the water. Just amazing.

    Hoi An = favourite

    djebru recommends this,

I had read about the old quarter before3 going to Hoi An, and figured i'd better go there. The best way to see it is just to stay in it - our hotel was in the middle of the old quarter, so we experienced it over several days by staying in an historic building and eating in plenty of others. It's a fantastic town, great food, great tailors, lovely people; we had a ball. If you're coming into town, remember that cars and buses can't come into the old quarter, so you'll have to walk part of the way with your luggage. When i was there in May it rained A LOT and all the streets were being repaired, so there were quite a few pedestrian detours in areas that had been dug up. It was fine, but if you have trouble with mobility you might want to keep it in mind when choosing somewhere to stay.
