Lonely Planet review

This neo-Gothic church, the Iglesia Santa Capilla, is modeled on the Sainte Chapelle of Paris. It was ordered by General Antonio Guzmán Blanco in 1883 and built on the site of the first mass celebrated after the foundation of the town.

Illuminated by a warm light through stained-glass windows, the marble and white-washed interior has an elaborate stone altar and an unusual open-work vault. One of the treasured possessions of the church is the sizable painting Multiplication of the Bread, by Arturo Michelena, hanging in the right-hand aisle.
