Tanna’s weather is usually drier and milder than most other islands in Vanuatu. Isangel’s average summer maximum is 30°C while winter nights can be cool, making a jacket necessary.

A freak, hours-long hailstorm in late 2002 caused landslides that took out concrete bridges and dumped massive boulders on South Beach Rd – it also destroyed much of Turtle Bay Inn, but the resort has been rebuilt.

Cyclone Ivy blew away or damaged every ni-Van house and school on the island in February 2004.
