Getting there & away

Boat

Luganville has customs (36854, 36225), quarantine and immigration (36724) facilities for yachts at Main Wharf, and a marine repair workshop at the Maritime College. Segond Channel is the town’s main anchorage and there’s a clean sandy bottom out from Beachfront Resort, but it’s not as well protected as Aore Island, the safest anchorage for yachts – 40m deep, and away from the southeasterlies that hit the mainland. Yachts must always use the moorings at Aore and Bokissa, as the reefs can be damaged by just the touch of an anchor.

Air

Luganville’s Pekoa Airport is the feeder airport for the following northern islands: Ambae, Ambrym, Epi, Maewo, Malekula, Paama, Pentecost, Banks Islands and Torres Islands. Contact Vanair (airport36506; 36421).

There are at least two return flights daily between Santo and Vila. The island’s other commercial strip is at Lajmoli, on the northwest coast. Vanair stops there on some flights; include it if possible as it takes you over the awesome central mountains.
