Lonely Planet review
In the backcountry near Tuolumne Meadows, the exceptionally popular High Sierra Camps provide shelter and sustenance to hikers who'd rather not carry food or a tent. The camps - called Vogelsang, Merced Lake, Sunrise, May Lake and Glen Aulin - are set 6 miles to 10 miles apart along a loop trail. They consist of dormitory-style canvas tent cabins with beds, blankets or comforters, plus showers and a central dining tent. Guests bring their own sheets and towels.
The rate is around US$130 per adult, per night, including breakfast and dinner. Organized hiking or saddle trips led by ranger naturalists are also available (from $720).
A short season (roughly late June to September) and high demand require a lottery for reservations. Applications may be requested between September 1 and November 20 (559-253-5676; www.yosemitepark.com) and must be submitted between October 15 and November 30 (dates may change). The lottery is in mid-December. If you don't have a reservation, call 559-253-5674 to check for cancellations.
