River Riders
River Riders is a one-stop shop for adventure sports, and rental bikes (half-day $20 to $30) to explore the C&O Canal Towpath. The scenic path follows the Potomac River. It’s not exactly technical mountain biking stuff, but it’s a beautiful ride. Or take a raft or kayak trip down the Shenandoah River (Class I-III). The rafting costs $55 to $75, the kayaking $65. Try the kayaking if you’re looking for more of an adrenaline rush. A cheaper (and equally fun) option is tubing. For $27 to $35 the company will give you a tube, life jacket and shuttle transport to and from the Potomac River. You’re then on your own to negotiate the Class I-III rapids.

Country Café
A charmingly old-fashioned restaurant serving hearty breakfasts as well as fresh-made chili, soups and sandwiches.

Anvil
Chicken quesadillas, vegetarian pasta and pan-seared trout taste mighty fine here after a day’s outing.

John Brown Museum
The laughably tacky John Brown Museum tells the story of Brown's life and raid in wax.
