  4. Been There Done That? Innovative Family Tours in Washington DC

    Blog: Ciao Bambino! - 31 October 2011

Since we've been highlighting multiple ways to explore DC through Dana’s posts about Touring the White House, Choosing Kid-Friendly DC Tours, and DC Kid-Friendly Museums (to name a few) — I thought I’d jump on the bandwagon. Last spring, I tried to hunt down some new ways to explore Washington DC with my kids as they've been there many times. This is the follow ...

  6. Getting a Tour at The White House

    Blog: Ciao Bambino! - 3 October 2011

The White House is recognized around the world. Home of the President of the United States, it's the closest thing the US has to an official castle. But unless you're a princess, visiting is not a ball. Is the effort worth the reward? When I decided to take the kids to the Nation's Capital, I knew I had to try. In my mind, visiting Washington DC and not going to the White House would be like going to Paris and not going to the top of the Eiffel Tower.

  8. So Many Kid-Friendly Washington DC Tours, So Little Time

    Blog: Ciao Bambino! - 22 September 2011

Our summer trip to Washington, DC was designed to be an introduction, not a whirlwind tour. We only spent a few days. My thinking, as the girls get older and more and more US history comes their way, DC would be timely. I knew the trip would be a learning experience, but overall I wanted it to make sure it was fun. When planning the trip, one of the hardest things was figuring out what the kids and I would truly enjoy; I didn't want the entire trip to come off as a giant history lesson.

  9. Family Bike Tours in Washington DC for Photo Friday

    Blog: Ciao Bambino! - 16 September 2011

One of the toughest parts about traveling in Washington DC with kids is that there's so much to see and do. Even when you narrow down the "must see" there's still a great deal of physical ground to cover. Getting to and from so many monuments and memorials takes time and can wear on travelers young and old. So when I discovered Bike and Roll, I ran, or should I say rolled, with it.

  10. So Many Washington DC Museums for Kids to See, So Little Time

    Blog: Ciao Bambino! - 7 September 2011

I love planning family trips. Short and long, near and far. But when I started working on Washington, DC with the kids, I have to admit it took me a while to get into it. There's a mind boggling number of choices for families headed to DC, especially when it comes to museums. The nation's capital could also be called the museum capital. The Smithsonian Institution is comprised of 19 museums and the National Zoological Park.

  12. Family Travel Washington DC: Trip Planning Tips

    Blog: Ciao Bambino! - 22 August 2011

Last winter my 7th grade daughter brought home information about the school trip to Washington, DC. She wanted to go, but said she’d rather do DC with the family instead of her friends. Once the shock wore off, I started planning almost instantly. Being organized is the key to exploring DC with the kids. Plan Ahead & Reserve, Reserve, Reserve Unless your kids are fans of waiting in long lines, do your homework. Have a family discussion, decide what you’d like to do and get busy ...

  13. Ten New Ways to Experience Washington DC with Kids

    Blog: Ciao Bambino! - 16 March 2011

My research for our latest DC adventure began a month ago. Exploring Washington DC with kids is simply better with a plan. I’m all for winging it when traveling, but the amount of time spent on your feet while touring DC can easily turn a good trip into a bad one. However, with a little pre-trip work, you can organize what you want to see by general location and manage the distance you need to walk. Remember that most sites also require you to be ...

  16. DC: a weekend diary

Blog: Roasted Bugs and Sticky Rice - 22 November 2010

Thursday Millbrook alumni happy hour. (Millbrook was my boarding/high school, and I love it very much and try to attend as many events as possible in both NYC and DC). We met at the Old Ebbitt Grill, a lovely, historic old bar (est. 1856) for bloody mary’s. I ordered mine spicy and wasn’t disappointed. Also [...]

Blog: Roasted Bugs and Sticky Rice - 10 October 2010

Every time my boyfriend takes the cheap Bolt Bus or the reliable Vamoose down from NYC to visit me in DC (NEVER take Amtrak- don’t support those overpriced, always-tardy fiends!),  his visit includes a dirt cheap meal in Chinatown. Smaller than NY’s Chinatown, DC’s version is easily walked in its entirety in 6 minutes. I [...]

  18. A Free Luncheon on the River Seine after all

Blog: Travel Adventures of Newman - 9 September 2010

Most visitors to Washington DC make a beeline for the city's famous museums and memorials, which are quite excellent, interesting, and above all, FREE. Unlike most cities where museum visits can cost nearly $20, this is quite an amazing bargain for budget travelers who can easily spend days without shelling out a single penny.

  21. DC's Jazz in the Garden

    Blog: UnpoppedCollar - 9 August 2010

Sure, people in DC love to complain about how hot and humid it is here in July, but Summers in the District also bring something else: Jazz in the Garden.  Every Friday evening, nearly every twenty-something (it seems) in DC heads out to the Sculpture Garden for a makeshift picnic-happy-hour.  It’s hard to imagine a better way to start the weekend than this.

  22. Showing Patriotism on the 4th of July with French Wine and Cheese (and a US Capitol Building Post)

    Blog: MuseumChick - 4 July 2010

When everybody at home is gorging themselves on BBQ hamburgers and hotdogs while waiting for fireworks, I'll be celebrating the United States Independence Day from Paris with wine and cheese (because hotdogs are hard to find here). Thinking of home during the 4th of July prompted me to recall my visit last February to Washington DC and the Capitol Building with my aunt and cousin. My history buff cousin organized getting us a tour of the Capitol Building (my first time there) and later that day we museum hopped at the largest museum complex in the world, the Smithsonian. The...

The white marble monuments speak of warlike efforts, of heroism in the face of danger and of the self-glorification of the ruling people.

I recently visited the National Gallery of Art here in Washington DC. If art makes me laugh, I like it. The following made me titter. “NO” by Jasper Johns. It’s hard to see in 2D, but the line in the middle is a wire actually coming out of the canvas and ending with the word [...]
