Lonely Planet review for Dumbarton Oaks
One of the finest mansions in DC is set on some of its finest gardens, a multi-terraced study in pruned elegance. Nineteen ponds and pools are dolloped over 16 acres of landscaped goodness. In the mansion itself is a collection of fine Byzantine and pre-Columbian art, an intricately painted beamed ceiling and El Greco’s The Visitation. As a bonus, this is where folks decided to found the UN in 1944. The house is operated by the trustees of Harvard University, so Harvard students, faculty and staff get in for free.
