National Sculpture Garden
The National Gallery of Art’s 6-acre garden is studded with whimsical sculptures such as Roy Lichtenstein’s House, a giant Claes Oldenburg typewriter eraser and Louise Bourgeois’ leggy Spider. They are scattered around a fountain – a great place to dip your feet in summer. From November to March the garden’s central fountain becomes an Ice Rink (adult/child $7/6; 10am-10pm). Skate rental is available. During summer the garden is open an hour later than the rest of the year and evening jazz concerts are held on Fridays starting around 5pm.

United States Botanic Garden
Resembling London’s Crystal Palace, this iron-and-glass greenhouse provides a beautiful setting for displays of exotic and local plants. Make sure to check out the Titan Arum, also known as Amorphophallus titanum (‘giant misshapen penis’) and the ‘corpse flower’ (a Sumatran native that blooms rarely and randomly throughout the year, but when it does, it smells like rotten meat. Mmm!) Behind the conservatory, across Independence Ave, you’ll find the grand Bartholdi Fountain.
