Lonely Planet review for Frederick Douglass National Historic Site
The hilltop home – Cedar Hill – of the escaped slave, abolitionist, man of letters and icon of the American Civil Rights movement is maintained as a nice museum that overlooks, in a figurative and literal way, the city and neighborhood that represents his nation’s highest hopes and harshest realities. Douglass lived here from 1877 until his death in 1895. The house still contains most of his original furnishings, down to his wire-rim eyeglasses on his roll-top desk. Start your visit with the corny intro movie in the visitor center, then proceed to one of the excellent hourly tours.
