Lonely Planet review
Big shot New York research physician, medical publisher and philanthropist Dr Arthur M Sackler had more than a little obsession with the aesthetic Asian art world - over his lifetime he gathered more than 1000 pieces, including centuries-old ceramic, jade and bronze creations. Following his 1987 death he bequeathed these items, along with around US$4 million to build a gallery to house them, to the Smithsonian.
Although the gallery focuses largely on Sackler's collection, its offerings also include other important gifts like the Vever Collection of Islamic books and contemporary Japanese porcelains.
Exotic rotating exhibits refresh the gallery while maintaining its Asian theme. They also help emphasize the visual armchair exploration of faraway places through photographic, textural and artistic masterpieces. Past successes included an exhibit on rural Japanese basket makers and 18th-century Korean art. Don't miss ImaginAsia on the 2nd floor. It is a wonderful interactive exhibit for children aged six to 14. Free lectures, films, gallery talks and tours round out its offerings.
If you have even a passing interest in Asian art and culture this museum is worthy of at least an hour of your time.
Asian art posters and limited edition prints, jewelry and world crafts are found in the gallery shop. It also sells loads of books and educational materials.
