Eastern Market's South Hall is the closest DC gets to foodie heaven: in its friendly confines are a bakery, dairy, fish counter, poultry counter, butcher, produce vendors and flower stands. A real Southern feast awaits - the Southern Maryland Seafood Company serves up the blue crabs and shrimp; over at Union Meat Company are fresh chitterlings, pigs' trotters and all kinds of sausage and steak.

Next door, Market 5 Gallery is a space used by local artists to exhibit visual and performing arts. On weekends, both the artists and the farmers markets spill out onto the sidewalks. Besides fresh produce, you can pick up handmade scarves, prints, smelly soaps and candles, colorful pottery, painted ceramics and unusual jewelry. Across the street at the weekend flea market vendors hawk cool refinished (or not) furniture.
