Lonely Planet review for Meskerem

As you make your way across DC, you’ll see loads of places offering Ethiopian food, but Meskerem, named for the first month of the Ethiopian calendar, remains one of our favorites. This spot is a stalwart of quality despite many years on the block. It’s the just-seared lamb served in spicy sauce, the wat (stew) scooped with spongy injera (pancake-like bread) and the vegetables, all deliciously spiced, not hot but rich, complex and savory. This is remarkably easy food for the most conservative palette, best washed down with some imported honey wine.

    What's Your Mood?

    hconnor recommends this,

This restaurant is great for vegetarians and carnivores alike. But, located right in the center of popular Adam Morgan, when you want to brave the journey to this restaurant depends on what you want in your evening.

On Friday and Saturday, you should expect a wait unless you get to the restaurant before 6:30. Then, the closer your departure gets to the witching hour, the rowdier you will find the streets to be. Now, if rowdy and active is what you are looking for after dinner, Madame’s Organ is right across the street and offers multiple floors to booze to your heart’s delight. If you are looking for something a little more low key, I suggest hitting this restaurant on a Sunday through Wednesday.

You may notice that there was nary a reference to what your dining experience will be like on a Thursday evening. Thursday night is for the adventurous. It is for the type of person who purchases a paper bag with a big question mark on the outside without any knowledge of the bag’s contents. For those adventurous many, head over to see what you may find. You may find a neighborhood slammed with people or you may find a ghost town, but whatever the ambiance may be, you can rest assured that the food will be quite spectacular.
