If one restaurant were to exemplify not only Georgetown, but all that George-town represents – the brownstone political aristocracy of Washington, DC – it would be 1789. Located in a smart Federal row house, the setting is colonial, cozy and distinguished all at once. As a bonus, the food is excellent. This kitchen was one of the first high-end geniuses of the ‘rustic New American’ genre, so if you’re going to try local ingredients sexed up with provincial flare, such as roasted Virginia rabbit with country ham and English peas, this is the spot to indulge your taste buds. Formal wear (jacket) is not only expected, but required for dinner.

    It's not just Aussies who know how to do lamb!

    After living in Washington DC for 18 months, without so much as a Vegemite sandwich as a taste of home, my parents finally made the trip to see me for my birthday. The choice of restaurant completely in my hands, and the bill would be taken care of!

    1789's reputation made it hard to ignore, and after asking many local Washingtonians for restaurant recommendations, the answer was clear. A convincing number responded- "Your parents are paying? You must go to 1789!" but the advice didn't stop there- they added "AND you MUST order the lamb!"

    So, off to 1789 we went, and order the lamb I did, and 8 years after that divine meal, I can still taste and smell that lamb like I had it yesterday.

    Set in a beautiful old house in Georgetown, this restaurant will exceed your expectations. Go there for a special meal, start with an old classic Cocktail, have three courses and pay the huge bill, because it is a meal and an experience you will never forget. DO NOT go if you're worried about spending money or on a budget!
