There are loads of big-box hotel chains in Arlington, which may not have much character, but they’re cheaper than sleeping in the District. Pick one near a Metro and it’s almost as convenient as staying in the city (especially true if you have a car – parking in the city costs upwards of $30 per day at hotels, while most here offer it for free). The best – and they’re almost interchangeable, but for their prices – are Key Bridge Marriott and Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City.
Old Town Alexandria offers a trade-off: the Metro is not as immediate and prices are higher, but the neighborhood is way more charming. Virginia room tax is about 10%.
