This restored 1920s building has been taken back to its classic, elegant roots. Enter through the arched glass entrance and enjoy the lobby's grandeur, which confirms that you have arrived. Rooms are of top-end business standard and well-equipped for getting stuff done. Should clients call, the cafe has bucolic views of tree-shaded K St and Franklin Square.

The Hamilton has the feel of a small-sized hotel with grande dame pretensions. The richly detailed carved plaster ceilings in the lobby are the kind that simply couldn't be replicated today. Accents lift the decor beyond the all-too-frequent safe blandness of corporate hotels: large glazed Chinese urns and screens give what could be bog-standard federalism an international flair. The 318 rooms are well-appointed and mix blues and golds with lustrous woods. Baths are mostly made of marble and some rooms boast extra fittings aimed at female travellers such as lighted make-up mirrors, although TV anchors and cross-dressers will also appreciate these perks. The best rooms face K St and end in 35, 38, 39, 40 and 41. 14K, the cafe with the view, has good American classics through the day and evening. Grab a terrace table on warm nights.
