    Green Lantern & Tool Shed

The gay Green Lantern is downstairs, with leather-lovers’ Tool Shed on the 2nd floor. This place attracts a slightly older crowd, and there are all kinds of daily promotions – tea dances on Sundays, free beer for shirtless men Thursday nights (10pm to 11pm), Monday karaoke etc. The Lantern has a nice, long happy hour too – from 4pm till at least 9pm, sometimes till close. All in all there’s a hairier, bear-ier crowd here, so if you like ‘em young and waxed, stick to Dupont.

    JR’s

At JR’s weekday happy hour you might think you’ve stepped into a living Banana Republic ad: chinos and button-downs are de rigueur at this popular gay hangout frequented by the 20- and 30-something, work-hard and play-hard set. Some DC residents claim that the crowd at JR’s epitomizes the conservative nature of the capital’s gay scene; but even if you love to hate it, as many do, JR’s is the happy-hour spot in town and is packed more often than not.

    Halo

The funny thing about Halo is it looks like it should be a total den of douche-baggery, what with its super-sleek spaceship-style furniture and Euro I’m-too-cool-for-school vibe, but then you go inside and it’s a totally friendly, even laid-back gay bar. The crowd is older and accommodating, and generally a joy to be around. This is a great bar for gay meet-and-greet early in the evening, although things definitely get a bit more cruise-y as the night wears on.
