    East Potomac Park

Physically a stone’s throw from the National Mall, as tourists go, East Potomac Park may as well be in Siberia. A very pleasant, green, cherry-blossom-lined Siberia that is a lovely spot for walking, fishing and general gamboling (not that you can’t do any of that stuff in the real Siberia). A 5-mile paved trail, great for cycling or in-line skating, runs around the park’s circumference, paralleling Ohio Dr. The center of the park is the East Potomac Park golf course. The park sits on a finger of land that extends southward from the Tidal Basin into the Potomac River. Capital Crescent Trail

Running between Bethesda and Georgetown, the constantly evolving Capital Crescent Trail is a fabulous (and very popular) jogging and biking route. Built on an abandoned railroad bed, the 11-mile trail is paved and is a great leisurely day trip through woody parkland – it links up with the C&O Canal & Towpath and paths through Rock Creek Park. In Bethesda, MD, the trail begins at the Wisconsin Ave Tunnel, on Wisconsin Ave just south of Old Georgetown Rd (it is clearly marked and accessible from the Bethesda Metro station).

  3. Washington & Old Dominion Trail

Despite its dense suburbs, northern Virginia is laced with hiking and biking trails. The 45-mile paved Washington & Old Dominion Trail follows an old railway bed from Shirlington, in southern Arlington, to Purcellville, in Virginia’s Allegheny foothills. (For the truly ambitious, it’s a short jump from here to the 2000 miles of Appalachian Trail, going south to Georgia and north to Maine.) The scenic, well-maintained trail allows horseback riding between Vienna and Purcellville. Exit right from the East Falls Church Metro station.

  4. Tourmobile

Tourmobile’s primary tour runs around the National Mall, Capitol, White House and out to Arlington National Cemetery. You can hop off and reboard free at any of its 40 stops, which is nice for those who aren’t able to walk long distances. Tourmobile also does separate tours of Arlington National Cemetery (adult/child $7.50/3.75), Mount Vernon ($32/16) and some black heritage sites ($7/3.50). A twilight tour, See Washington by Night ($20/10), is offered in season – mid-June through Labor Day (first Monday in September).
