Camping is at four NPS campgrounds: Mathews Arm, Big Meadows, Lewis Mountain and Loft Mountain. Most are open mid-May to October. Camping elsewhere requires a free backcountry permit, available from any visitor center.
For not-so-rough lodging, stay at Skyland Lodge, Big Meadows or Lewis Mountain, all open from early March to mid-November. Reservations can be made by calling 800-999-4714 or booking online at www.visitshenandoah.com.
Skyland and Big Meadows both have restaurants and taverns with nightly live music. Big Meadows is the prettiest and largest resort in the park and offers the most services, including gas, laundry and camp store. It's best to bring your own food into the park if you're going camping or on extended hikes.
