    3rd St Diner

This diner resembles the aftermath of a pink-and-blue explosion. Bring quarters for the (loud) jukebox and lose the attitude because this dive serves it up quick, no frills, 24/7.

Museum & White House of the Confederacy

Museum & White House of the Confederacy traces the history of the Confederate States of America with the country's largest collection of Confederate civilian and military artifacts. It's a must-see for any history and Civil War buff. The adjacent 1818 White House mansion was the home of CSA President Jefferson Davis.

    Maymont Park

This former private estate is now a 100-acre public park, containing the fully furnished Maymont House, Japanese and Italian gardens, an arboreum and a small zoo. It's the most visited attraction in Richmond, and it's easy to see why: Maymont Park is a lovely place to while away a warm afternoon.

    Julep's

Richmond's latest, and some say greatest, shrine to refined New Southern cuisine, Julep's is where you go to impress someone and have a swank, lovely meal in the process. The earth-toned, 1940s-style interior only makes that yellowfin with the wild mushroom orzo that much classier.

    Millie's Diner

Breakfast, lunch or dinner, Millie's does it all, and does it well. But where this Richmond icon really shines is Sunday brunch - our favorite dish was the Devil's Mess, an open-faced omelet with spicy sausage, curry, veg, cheese and avocado. Heaven help us.

    St John's Episcopal Church

It was at St John's Episcopal Church that firebrand Patrick Henry uttered his famous battle cry, 'Give me Liberty, or give me Death!' during the rebellious 1775 Second Virginia Convention. His speech is reenacted at 2pm on Sunday in summer.

    Croaker's Spot

Everyone in Jackson Ward knows this soul and seafood joint. The decor is proudly African American and the food…angels sing on high of the 'fish boat': fried catfish drowning in spicy sauce with hunks of cornbread and creamy grits on the side.

    Three Monkeys

Specialty drinks, pastel walls, Mediterranean-Asian-whatever-fusion cuisine - bah! Yeah, that stuff is all here, but at night hormonal guys and gals hang out on the heated patio and act like establishment namesakes - and so should you.

    Edo's Squid

Easily the best Italian restaurant in Richmond, Edo's serves up mouthwatering, authentic cuisine such as eggplant Parmesan, spicy shrimp diavolo pasta, daily specials and, of course, squid. This place can get very crowded and noisy.

    Virginia Holocaust Museum

The Virginia Holocaust Museum is structured like an attic/diorama of the Holocaust survivors who settled here after WWII. It's occasionally kitschy but still powerful, due to the personalized nature of the exhibits.

    Ipanema Café

Vegetarians and vegans will be in heaven at this hip hole-in-the-wall. There are a few fish and poultry dishes, but the wonderful Mediterranean- and Asian-influenced veg dishes will satisfy even the most hard-core carnivore.

    Capital Ale House

Popular with political wonks from the nearby state capitol, this downtown pub has an awesome selection of beer (46 on tap and 250 bottled) and decent pub grub. The frozen trough on the bar keeps your drink ice-cold.

    Hidden Treasure

Seeing as it's right across from the city visitor center this place isn't all that hidden, which is fine considering the quality seafood (try the crab bisque) at this cozy, occasionally chaotic neighborhood joint.

    Tobacco Company Restaurant

An embodiment of the era when tobacco was king, the atmosphere of this three-story, brothel-like restaurant-bar is more of a draw than the food. Have a drink instead.

    Panda Veg

This dark, student-y vegetarian enclave makes a point of proving tofu can replace meat in any Chinese dish you can imagine. Vegan buffets run on weekends.

    Ann's Soul Food

If you must have that early heart attack, best earn it by shoveling through the excellent meatloaf and corncakes at this spartan diner in Jackson Ward.
