  1. Nauticus National Maritime Center

    Nauticus is the biggest attraction here, overshadowed only by the USS Wisconsin battleship (a 'Desert Storm' veteran) docked alongside. This comprehensive naval museum has ingenious interactive exhibits and entertaining shows, including submarine rides, multimedia naval battles and flight simulators.

  2. Norfolk Botanical Gardens

    The Norfolk Botanical Gardens offer 19km (12mi) of pathways in, around and through all kinds of beautiful landscaped flora. A butterfly garden, Renaissance Garden and children's vegetable garden are among the many areas you can choose for a stroll.

  3. Chrysler Museum of Art

    Chrysler Museum of Art is a grand place with a superb collection and well worth a detour. Exhibits include paintings by Gainsborough, Renoir, Picasso, Pollock and Warhol, and glass ranging from ancient Roman to Tiffany pieces.

  4. Naval Station Norfolk

    The world's largest navy base, and one of the busiest airfields in the country, this is a must-see. Depending on what ships are in port, you might see aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates, amphibious assault ships and submarines. The 45-minute bus tours are conducted by naval personnel and must be booked in advance (hours vary). Photo ID is required for adults. Alternatively, view the docks from a narrated, two-hour cruise aboard the Victory Rover.

    Houses the final resting place of WWII hero General Douglas MacArthur and his wife, Jean. The complex includes a museum, theater and exhibits of the general's military and personal artifacts.
