Culture Shock Ratings

The culture shock rating considers the level of development in the location, the area's infrastructure and how easy it is to access services. It also takes into consideration how different the food and customs are and whether English is widely spoken. While generalisations are always tricky, here’s a summary of the ratings:

Rating 1

This is the least confronting of Intrepid's product range. English is the native language and the food, customs and access to services will be familiar to you.

Rating 2

You will probably have experienced food like this in restaurants back home and English is commonly spoken. Services are available most of the time but there may be some cultural differences.

Rating 3

Expect some culture shock. You will be exposed to signs of poverty and access to services may be sporadic. The food will be quite different to home and English speakers harder to find. Respecting the local culture will make it easier to fit in and really experience the location.

Rating 4

The comforts of home are more of a rarity. English is not common and the food will be quite different to what you are used to. It is important to observe some of the local customs to not cause offence. Many of the locals' standard of living may be confronting.

Rating 5

You're really out there! You'll need to pay specific attention to health and hygiene. A large proportion of locals' living conditions are a world away from standards you are used to. You may have difficulty finding an English speaker and there is little or no access to services. Paying heed to local customs is essential.

Itinerary

Day 1 Los Angeles

Discover the glitz and glamour of sprawling Los Angeles county. Perhaps arrive early to enjoy a spot of sightseeing.

Day 2 Joshua Tree National Park/Lake Havasu

Travel through the desert to Joshua Tree National Park. Cross the Colorado River near Lake Havasu, a hive for water sports.

Day 3 Grand Canyon

Hike around the rim or into the Grand Canyon, or opt to take a helicopter flight for a spectacular bird's-eye view over the region.

Days 4-5 Las Vegas

Drive down the famous Route 66, head out across the Mojave Desert and arrive in 'Sin City' - aka Las Vegas, Nevada.

Day 6 Death Valley/Sierra Nevada

Journey to Sierra Nevada via the scorching landscape of Death Valley.

Day 7 Yosemite National Park

Travel to the heart of the Sierra Nevada Mountains en route to the granite cliffs and cascading waters of Yosemite National Park.

Day 8 San Francisco

Make tracks to San Fran - definitely one of the city highlights on this trip. In free time, visit Alcatraz, perhaps cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge or hop around experiencing the many fun tourist attractions in San Francisco.

Day 9 Mendocino

The popular artist colony of Mendocino is famous for its ocean views.

Day 10 Redwood National Park

Stroll the Avenue of Giants in Redwood National Park, a road lined with magnificent, ancient redwoods - some reaching 90 m.

Day 11 Crater Lake National Park

See some of the best views of Crater Lake, a seemingly bottomless expanse.

Day 12 Oregon Dunes

Continue north to the Oregon Dunes and explore these giant sand hills either by foot or, for the adventurous, by dune buggy.

Day 13 Silver Falls State Park

Stop by Eugene, the lumber and wood-producing centre of Oregon. Set off on hikes among the forested canyons and waterfalls of Silver Falls.

Day 14 Mt St Helens

Travel through Portland en route to the active Mt St Helens, which is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Day 15 Mt Rainier/Seattle

The adventure ends in the quirky city of Seattle - the 'birthplace of grunge'.
