    Big Top Gallery & Three Ring Circus

    Just bordering downtown, this arts and education center is essentially a very funky cross between an art gallery (2pm to 6pm Thursday and Friday, noon to 5pm Saturday), studio space and something like a circus of dreams. There’s a small main stage that occasionally hosts some great live performances.

    Contemporary Arts Center

    The grand modernist entrance to the CAC, a soaring ceiling vault of airy space and conceptual metal and wooden accents, is almost reason enough to step into this converted warehouse. Almost. The best reason for visiting is a good crop of rotating exhibitions by local artists, plus a packed events calendar that includes plays, skits, dance and concerts that draw names as big as Death Cab for Cutie.

    New Orleans Center for Creative Arts

    New Orleans, like few American cities of its size, lives and dies off its arts scene. This is a city unapologetically in love with (and largely built on) the work of its musicians, painters and writers, and many of the next generation of such artists are educated at Nocca. Admission to this prestigious center, one of the best arts schools in the USA, is by audition only. If accepted, students (who are concurrently enrolled in their normal schools) specialize in fields ranging from the visual arts and creative writing to dance and cooking, instructed by artists at the top of their craft.
