Lonely Planet review

Unbelievable, beautiful and altogether stunning, the Brookgreen Gardens are one of the most magical places you'll ever visit in South Carolina. Blooming on the site of four former rice plantations, these spectacular gardens were the vision of Virginia shipbuilder Archer Huntington and his wife, sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington.

Today, the gardens hold the largest collection of American sculpture in North America. It's as though the stone, marble and metal works bloomed here; they are as much a part of the garden as the ancient trees, topiaries and flowers. It would take several days to explore the entire 9000-acre preserve, which is why the admission ticket is good for seven days. Special events take place on summer evenings; call to find out what's on during your visit.
