Introducing Central Kentucky
The gorgeous Bluegrass Parkway runs from I-65 in the west to Rte 60 in the east, passing through some of the most luscious pasturelands in Kentucky.

About 40 miles south of Louisville is Bardstown, with a lovely historic downtown and enough bourbon to kill an elephant. Famous for its gaggle of distilleries, the town comes alive in September for the Kentucky Bourbon Festival (800-638-4877; www.kybourbonfestival.com).
Follow Hwy 61 southwest and you’ll hit Hodgenville and the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site (270-358-3137; www.nps.gov/abli; admission free; 8am-4:45pm, to 6:45pm summer), which features a replica of a Greek temple constructed around an old log cabin. Research has established that Lincoln was not actually born in the cabin, so it’s referred to as his ‘symbolic birthplace.’
Forty miles south of Lexington is Berea, known for its wealth of folk art. The Kentucky Artisan Center (859-985-5448; www.kentuckyartisancenter.ky.gov; just off Hwy 75 at Exit 77; 8am-8pm) has a large variety handcrafts and food.
