16th St Baptist Church
The 16th St Baptist Church was long a centre for the black community in Birmingham, and during the 1950s became a gathering place for civil rights meetings. In September 1963, members of the Ku Klux Klan set off a bomb during a Sunday morning service in the church, killing four girls. Today, the rebuilt church is a house of worship and a memorial.
