Local transport
Taxi
Taxi rates are $1.70 flag fall ($2.70 after 9pm) plus $1.80 per mile. The biggest company in town is Yellow-Checker Taxi (210-222-2222).
Bus & tram
Bus
From the Greyhound Bus Station (210-270-5824; www.greyhound.com; 500 N St Marys St), you can get to all the big cities in the state (and lots of the small ones). For example, Houston is 3½ hours and $24 away.
VIA Downtown Information Center (210-362-2020; www.viainfo.net; 260 E Houston St; 9am-6pm Mon-Fri, to 2pm Sat) is the place to buy a $3 day bus pass. That includes the extremely tourist-friendly downtown trolley-bus routes ($1 one way) – the best way to travel around downtown. Park at the VIA Ellis Alley Park & Ride (210-362-2020; btwn E Crockett & Center Sts; ticket office 7am-6pm Mon-Fri, Sat 9am-2pm), a quick two stops from the Alamo. If you buy any VIA ticket, parking’s free; ask for a parking transfer on the bus and put it in the slot when you exit.
Air
You can reach 28 US and Mexican cities nonstop from San Antonio International Airport (210-207-3411; www.sanantonio.gov/airport), 8 miles north of downtown off I-410, east of Hwy 281. VIA city bus 2 ($1) runs from the airport to downtown about every 30 minutes, or you can take a SATrans (210-281-9900; www.saairportshuttle.com) shuttle bus for $14. A taxicab ride will cost about $20.
Car & motorcycle
Parking-garage fees in San Antonio really add up. It’s better to use the metro transit buses in the center. Major car-rental agencies all have offices at the airport.
Train
The Sunset Limited (Florida–California) and Texas Eagle (San Antonio–Chicago) trains stop a few days a week (usually late at night) at the Amtrak Station (210-223-3226; www.amtrak.com; 350 Hoefgen Ave).
