One, two...eight chandeliers dripping with tiers of crystals. Grecian bronzes, French Empire antiques. The regal lobby reflects the turn-of-the-20th-century elegance at the St Anthony. Built in 1909, this historic hotel has long attracted both European and Hollywood royalty.

For weeks during the filming of 1960's The Alamo, John Wayne called the St Anthony home (suite 884 is named after him). Several other films, including The Newton Boys (1997) have used the façade as a back drop. The traditional rooms have period-appropriate four- poster beds and gilt-frame art work. But frankly, the trappings could use an update. Still, the white-glove service and 38 suites keep bringing in stars like Matthew McConaughey. Stroll along the glass-enclosed promenade looking out at Travis Park, and you'll feel like Hollywood royalty too. Don't miss all the old photos of stars on the lobby wall.
