The Fairmount Hotel
Lonely Planet review
Small and unassuming. You could almost walk by and miss the exclusive digs at the Fairmount. Good thing, too. Who wants others to notice? In a city as crowd-filled as San Antonio, privacy is at a premium.
You can tell the old section of the hotel, built in 1906, by slightly sloping floors. Otherwise you'd think all 37 highly individual rooms were historic. Cornflower blue-stripe wallpaper and model wood sailing ships decorate the nautical room (214). A relative of president Lyndon Johnson designed suite 344, with its luxurious pink silks and sunken bedroom. Graceful Victorian antiques are a constant throughout. To get between the rooms and to the Internet computer, you have to climb some stairs. A few years back the hotel adopted Luke, a huge yellow lab, from the local animal shelter. Guests like to walk him from his hang out in the marble-clad lobby to nearby Hemisphere Park. Proceeds of products emblazoned with his likeness go to help less fortunate pets.
