Fabulous, funky and design-driven, this Spanish castle-inspired hotel opened to acclaim in 2006. Outside, the Contessa looks like any other of the gazillion Riverwalk hotels. Inside, whimsy runs wild. Twinkly lights wind round three-story palm trees in the lobby. Lighted amoeba-like art glass floats along the restaurant wall. Black polka dot umbrellas top cafe tables. A rooftop pool makes up for the fact only four suites have riverfront balconies (more have river views).
Rooms are only a little more restrained, with colorful tapestry bed linens and pillows. Exposed brick, wood-beam ceilings and terracotta tile also add character. But this flight of fancy isn't just for adults. The penthouse spa caters to kids too. Suzie can get a bubble pedicure or manicure while you indulge in an herbal wrap.
