Lonely Planet review

Merengue out through your sliding glass doors onto the thatched umbrella-studded pool deck. (Or is that a samba playing?). Latin rhythms are always piped in, but on weekend nights you can watch new release movies on the big screen above the blue water. Though there seems to be a bit of a struggle between Miami-like chic and chain-motel bland here, tropical fun generally wins out.

A low-lying, all-white, all-windows 1960s exterior meets you at the street. The retro blue-green mosaic-tile mural hotel sign is too cool. El Tropicano has the mod exterior stylings covered. Cabana boy shirts on the front desk staff. An orange leather sofa snakes through the lobby. It's just too bad that the regular guestrooms fall flat. Sure, the bathroom's silver circle wallpaper and polished chrome accents shine. And the mango accent wall and single-serve espresso machine are nice touches. But the clunky oak furniture and too-boring-for-words art are all Holiday Inn. Only the presidential suite exudes an appropriately hip vibe - woven leather headboards, eye-popping red accent pillows, mid-century modern-inspired lamps. Ignoring the furnishings, the second-floor interior wheelchair-accessible kings are the best bet for size and pool proximity. Though the hotel is (just barely) on the Riverwalk, lush vegetation hides any river views.
