Boudro's
The real way to see the Riverwalk is through margarita- (or mojito-, or martini-) colored glasses. Start with a slightly sweet prickly-pear margarita (yes, there's cactus-flower nectar in it) at Boudro's. From there, can you track down the three other establishments that serve a prickly pear? Or which place offers the 42oz margarita? The horni margarita? After you walk back to your hotel responsibly, let us know which you think was the best, you can wait till you've recovered, of course.

Esquire Tavern
The Esquire Tavern is a 1933 speakeasy with a catwalk balcony perched high over the water. Come here for cheap drinks, colourful regulars and the longest bar in Texas (or so they claim). It's a local classic and a long-standing favourite - the real McCoy, if a little rough. A few tables on a rear balcony overlook the river far below.

John T Floore's Country Store
You gotta travel a little to get to this terrific old bar and dance hall, first opened in 1942 as a store by a friend of Willie Nelson's. (Willie used to play here nightly; the sign still says so.) Whether in the outdoor stage yard or by the fire in the rustic building, this is the true way to hear Texas country music on a Friday or Saturday night. Bandera Rd is off Hwy 16.

Menger Hotel
Menger Hotel Bar is a great bar for a summer's day when it's too hot to stay outside, or for a rainy winter's one. Modelled on the British House of Lords, it's dark, woody, and serious, yet still manages to be laidback. Teddy Roosevelt used to hang out here in his Rough Rider days.
