Getting around
Sprawling, spread-out Houston is all about superhighways and racinglike speeds (or parking lot–like traffic). Use the light rail and it’s possible to visit town car-free; most of the sights are on the downtown–Museum District–Reliant Park corridor. If you want to venture further, you’ll need to rent a car; the bus system is wholly inefficient for visitors’ needs.

Every major national rental agency can be found at either airport and at offices throughout town. The independent E-Z Rent-A-Car (281-442-7733; www.e-zrentacar.com; 2700 Greens Rd) is off-off airport, but its shuttle picks up from the Rental Center and it undercuts the big guys’ prices. It operates out of the Holiday Inn; take the hotel’s shuttle from the airport.

Cab rates are $3 flag fall and $1.50 for each additional mile. Note that Houston’s breadth means your cab tab can quickly surpass car-rental rates. Companies include United (713-699-0000) and Yellow (713-236-1111).
