    The Alley, as it's known locally, presents first-rate drama, with many first-run Broadway and off-Broadway shows making their way here. This well-funded and well-regarded theatre also performs its share of classics and musicals.

    This is the Houston-based little brother of the legendary Austin live music venue. While obviously not possessing the same illustrious history as its famous forebear, it hasn't missed a beat, with top-notch blues, rock and rockabilly at least five nights a week and a consistently fun vibe.

    A homey pub with 69 beers on tap, Ginger Man has a particularly nice yard - perfect for hanging out with students from nearby Rice U. (There are similar sister pubs in Austin and Dallas, too.)

    This suave establishment, sheltering within the Rice Hotel, is a supper club that serves up Mediterranean cuisine, with live jazz as an accompaniment. The jazz menu is as diverse and competently presented as the food menu.

  6. Theater District

    The Houston Grand Opera, the Society of the Performing Arts, the Houston Ballet, Da Camera chamber orchestra and the Houston Symphony all perform downtown in the Theater District. The district's website has ticket purchase and all schedules.

    Well-known hangout whose now-deceased original owner, Warren, was a boyfriend of the late great Liberace. If you are in the mood for strong drink and some like-minded company pull up a stool at this joint, put a classic on the juke box and have a chat to the locals over a beer and a shot.
